Refugee Action Coalition doubts arrests will ever be made over Manus death

Radio New Zealand International - April 3, 2014

The head of the Refugee Action Coalition says he has no faith that arrests will ever be made over the death of an asylum seeker at Papua New Guinea's Manus Island detention centre in February.

23-year-old Iranian Reza Berati died as a result of head injuries on February the 17th in an attack that has been blamed on guards employed by the security firm, G4S.

G4S is refusing to cooperate with a PNG police inquiry, and an Inquiry by the High Court judge, David Cannings, has been adjourned because of legal wrangling.

The Refugee Action Coalition's Ian Rintoul says authorities in PNG and Australia have no interest in getting to the bottom of who killed Reza Berati.

"To be honest I've got no confidence that there will be arrests. I do think however that we are likely to get to the bottom of it because I think too many people know what happened. That information will come out, I just don't think it's going to be because of anything that the authorities do."
