PNG police report adds to embarrassment for Australian Minister
Radio New Zealand International - February 28, 2014
The investigation found that the incident, nearly two weeks ago, that left 23-year-old Reza Berati dead and dozens of others injured happened inside the camp and that G4S guards were responsible for the attacks.
The coalition's spokersperson, Ian Rintoul, says police confirmed the attack happened inside the centre the day after it happened, yet it took Mr Morrison five days to change his statement that it happened after detainees breached the perimeter.
"Scott Morrison is coming out of this looking quite ridiculous, that someone who is actually in control of the camp, whose appointees actually run the camp and have overall managerial responsibility that themselves gave such a distorted and misleading report on Tuesday morning to Scott Morrison, I mean it beggars belief that he hasn't sacked those people."
Ian Rintoul says an independent inquiry needs to be established to look into how the whole incident has been handled.
