Forum leader fail to condemn abuses by Indonesian security forces

Australia West Papua Association (Sydney) Press Release - August 7, 2009

It is very disappointing that the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) leaders have again failed to condemn the human right abuses being committed by the Indonesian security forces in West Papua.

Joe Collins of the Australia West Papua Association (Sydney) said, "the Forum leaders have "condemned the actions of the Fiji military regime which have led to a severe deterioration in basic liberties and democratic institutions in Fiji', yet, they have failed to condemn the human right abuses being committed against another Pacific people by the Indonesian military forces in West Papua".

It is tragic when the key regional organization cannot expressed their collective concerns about the human rights situation in West Papua when it should be their moral duty to do so. They have let down the West Papuan people again, Collins said.
