AWPA again calls on the Australian government to halt ties with the Indonesian military

Australian West Papua Association (Sydney) Press Release - July 15, 2009

Although the TNI commander Djoko Santoso claims the Free Papua Movement (OPM) was likely behind shooting attacks in West Papua on the weekend, it was reported in the Jakarta Globe (14 July) by Papua's provincial police chief Bagus Ekodanto "that there was no evidence the OPM or anyone else in particular was involved, but noted that the attackers appeared to be well trained".

The Jakarta Globe also reported that

"One well-placed government source and a top official with the National Police's intelligence directorate told the Jakarta Globe that an elite military unit may have been behind the attacks. They declined to reveal the name of the unit".
and
"Based on past experience, this is what has been going on. To begin with, the military is unhappy with the security arrangement in which Freeport pays the police and not the military," the government source said. "Maybe they did it to show [Freeport] they need better security."
Joe Collins of AWPA said "that in light of these attacks where suspicion is falling on the Indonesian military and with the release of the recent report by Human Rights Watch which documents a number of cases of West Papuans who were tortured by Kopassus troops in the Merauke region, its time for the Australian Government to halt all ties with the Indonesian military until it can be proven the TNI are really reformed.
