PSM set to wave its banner at election

The Star - March 30, 2012

Petaling Jaya – For the first time ever, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) will be contesting under its own logo and the red fist banner in the general election. However, it maintains that it is not a component party in Pakatan Rakyat.

PSM co-founder and Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj said the formal registration of the party in August 2008 after a lengthy court battle meant that PSM candidates could now stand under their own banner. "Since all parties in Pakatan Rakyat can contest under their own logo, what is the difference then for PSM?

Previously, PSM candidates contested under DAP and PKR ticket. The 2008 general election saw three of its candidates standing under the PKR ticket. Besides the three, party deputy chairman M. Sarasvathy contested as an independent in a three-cornered fight with Barisan Nasional and the DAP for the Jelapang state seat in Perak.

Dr Jeyakumar hopes to maintain the status quo as in the 2008 polls of fielding four PSM candidates and that there will no multi-cornered fights.
