EO6 sue Hisham, IGP, his deputy and 76 cops
Free Malaysia Today - March 23, 2012
The six are Sungai Siput MP and PSM central committee member, Dr D Michael Jeyakumar, PSM deputy chairperson M Sarasvathy, PSM Youth leader R Sarat Babu, central committee member Choo Chon Kai, Sungai Siput branch chairman M Sukumaran and branch secretary A Letchumanan.
Seventy-six police officers and Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail were also named in the suit which was filed at 11am at the Kuala Lumpur High Court by their counsel, D Yudistra.
"My clients have faced false imprisonment and malicious process," said Yudistra, in explaining the inclusion of the 76 officers in the suit. "We are following the precedent set in the Lee Kay Tee case where everywrong doer was named."
Thirty party activists were arrested in June last year and remanded a week for supposedly 'waging war against the Agong' and distributing subversive materials.
Police must be professional
Subsequently six PSM activists, famously known as the EO6, were detained on July 2 under Emergency (Prevention of crime and Public Order) Ordinance and held for 28 days for being the prime movers of Bersih.
Jeyakumar said that the suit was filed to ensure the police acted in a professional manner. "In this case the police was used for political reasons and this is unacceptable," he said.
He added that the purpose of the suit is to find out who made allegations that PSM were carrying weapons during their campaign. He said that his party also wanted to know who made the allegation that PSM wanted to bomb a police station in Sungai Siput.
"We have attempted to have a dialogue with Hishammuddin on this matter but they turned us down.
No amount was specified in the suit but Jeyakumar said that they would make a claim from Hishammuddin, IGP and his depury if they suceed in the suit.
To another question on the top cops, he said: "In any functioning democracy, they'll have to step down but in Malaysia, well... you know"
