Objections by three Indonesian organisations to statements by LMND and FRM
Joint Statement - May 23, 2008
The following are statements of objection by three organisations that are part of the Ternate (North Maluku) National Liberation Front (FPN) against statements and releases issue by the Indonesian Student League for Democracy (LMND) and the People's Challenge Alliance (FRM). The original three documents were in the form of signed letters with letterheads, which were sent to the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation in the form of a facsimile. They were retyped for the purpose of publication.
POLITICS OF THE POOR-NATIONAL STUDENT LEAGUE FOR DEMOCRACY (LMND-PRM) - TERNATE CITY

STATEMENT
In connection with information obtained through the media website www.lmnd-online.org, which stated that the 14 (fourteen) activists/protesters arrested at the May 21, 2008 action who were part of the National Liberation Front were from the Ternate Indonesian Student League for Democracy (LMND). We hereby wish to state our position in accordance with the reality of what occurred during the action:
1. The 14 (fourteen) victims of the arrests and beatings were NOT MEMBERS OF THE TERNATE LMND;
2. That one of the victims of the arrests was a member of the LMND-PRM called Husein Karie;
3. We condemn the form of lies or manipulation of data that was carried out by the LMND NATIONAL EXECUTIVE;
4. We demand that the LMND NATIONAL EXECUTIVE be obliged to clarify the reports at www.lmnd-online.org;
5. That the LMND NATIONAL EXECUTIVE stop all forms of lies to the people, both in reports as well as other organisational work.
LMND-PRM Ternate also calls on the all the pro-democratic movements, other student movements, mass organisations and the Indonesian people to:
1. To be able to recognise and be on guard against and reject all forms of mobilisation that are taken up by the people’s liars movements as describe above;
2. Establish People’s Monitoring Posts in order to be able to supervise and keep on guard against polarisation by the movements that lie to the people.

2. Establish People’s Monitoring Posts in order to be able to supervise and keep on guard against polarisation by the movements that lie to the people.
3. Establish and form people’s youth coordination posts to anticipate and fight the movement that is lying to the people.

Ternate-North Maluku (21/05/08): An action opposing the fuel price [increases] in front of the Ternate Regional House of Representatives in North Maluku was marred by the brutal actions of police. The action opposing the fuel price hikes was held by 500 or so protesters from LMND, the All-Faculty Ternate University of Khairun Student Executive Council (BEM), GAMHAS, LISMI, the Association of Islamic Students (HMI), SAMURAI, street traders and HMI, initially proceeded peacefully, however, it was suddenly forcibly broken up by police. As a consequence, 14 protesters from... were arrested by police.

... In Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, 11 LMND members were arrested by police just before starting an action opposing the fuel price increases. All of the activists arrested are still being detained by the Bima district police without being accompanied by lawyers. In Manado, North Sulawesi Utara, three activists from LMND and Papernas were arrested by police after a clash occurred with a mass action. The three comrades arrested are Ances (PRD), Irman Hayun and Aman (LMND). In Ternate, North Maluku, 14 LMND Ternate members were also arrested by police, after police had earlier brutally broken up a student and people’s action opposing the fuel increases. The faces of the 14 activists arrested were black and blue from the beatings and violence by the police. In West Java, five LMND members were seriously wounded as a consequence of a brutal action by police breaking up a protest action.

In a number of areas, SBY-JK [President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Vice President Jusuf Kalla] through their institutions of violence (the National Police/Indonesian military), conducted brutal attacks that ended in clashes with actions opposing the fuel price [hikes]. In Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, 11 activists were arbitrarily arrested. In Manado, North Sulawesi, 3 people were arrested during an action opposing the fuel price hikes. In Ternate, North Maluku, an action was broken up by police and 14 LMND activists were arrested.
