Is the FPI anti-Pancasila? This is the TNI's chief's answer

Java Post - January 17, 2017

Armed Forces (TNI) chief General Gatot Nurmantyo says that the TNI is still looking into whether or not the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) can be categorised as a social organisation (Ormas) that is anti-Pancasila.

Nurmantyo said this after the declaring the TNI's commitment to combat social organizations that are anti-Pancasila. "It's still being looked into, with the FPI it's still being looked into", said Nurmantyo at the TNI's headquarters in Cilangkap, Jakarta, on Tuesday January 17.

Earlier, Nurmantyo explained the reasons why the TNI must combat anti-Pancasila social organisations.

According to Nurmantyo, part of implementing the mental revolution conveyed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is how to instill Pancasila into people's daily lives since Pancasila is the Indonesian nation's state ideology.

According to the former Army chief-of-staff (KSAD), if such social organisations are ignored and the TNI fails to combat them, then it will threaten Indonesia's sovereignty and will be equivalent to changing the nation's ideology.

"If there are social organisations that are against it, if they are ignored their ultimate aim will be to replace Pancasila", he said.

Because of this therefore, Nurmantyo does not wish to see anti-Pancasila social organisations flourish in Indonesia. Because their existence has the potential to indoctrinate society's way of thinking towards an ideology that is enshrined within Pancasila.

"The image of Indonesian society is gradually changing. What was before [a society] which was polite, refined and peaceful, with emergence of radicalism other countries have begun to criticise [us]", he said. (cr2/JPG)
