Bambang submits resignation

"Shortly after I arrived at my office this morning, I wrote a letter tendering my temporary resignation as KPK deputy chairman," he said, as quoted by Antara news agency, at the anti-graft body headquarters in Jakarta on Monday.
"The content of this letter mainly explained that I submitted my temporary resignation because I had received a summoning letter informing that I was a suspect, and that as a suspect, I was obliged to undergo a questioning process," he went on.
An Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician, Sugianto Sabran, reported Bambang to the National Police's crime investigation division on Jan. 19 for allegedly persuading a witness to commit perjury at the Constitutional Court in 2010 in the regional election dispute case.
"In the second paragraph of my letter, I stated that I believed the charges against me were engineered. All of their facts were fictitious. I truly believe that," said Bambang.
Based on the report, the National Police's crime investigation division arrested and detained Bambang on Friday before releasing him at around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, following pressure from civil society coalitions and guarantees provided by two KPK commissioners – Zulkarnain and Adnan Pandu Praja.
"Article 32 (2) of Law No.30/2002 on the KPK stipulates that if a KPK leader is named a suspect, he or she will be temporarily dismissed. I adhere to the 1945 Constitution and laws and submit my resignation for the good of the public," said Bambang.
He added that his resignation letter was still being discussed by three KPK leaders: Zulkairnan, Adnan and chairman Abraham Samad. (ebf)
