Jokowi suspends KPK chief, deputy and appoints replacements

Jakarta Globe - February 18, 2015

Jakarta – President Joko Widodo will issue a presidential decree announcing the temporary suspension of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Abraham Samad and deputy chief Bambang Widjojanto.

Joko said in a televised press conference on Wednesday that he had decided to dismiss the two KPK leaders due to the ongoing legal process surrounding them.

"Regarding the legal situation of Abraham Samad and Bambang Widjojanto and the emptiness of KPK leadership, based on the law I have to issue a temporary dismissal for the two leaders," he said.

"I will issue a Presidential Regulation in Lieu of Law for the dismissal and three presidential regulations for the appointment of their substitutes.

"The temporary substitutes are Taufiequrachman Ruki, Prof. Dr. Indrianto Seno Adji, and Johan Budi," Joko added.

Taufiequrachman was the KPK's first chairman, while Indrianto is a law professor, and Johan is the KPK's deputy for corruption prevention.

Abraham and Bambang, as well as deputies Adnan Pandu Praja and Zulkarnain, have all recently been named in historic legal cases by the National Police.

Many observers believe the accusations are retaliation for the KPK's decision to name former National Police chief candidate Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan a corruption suspect.

At the same press conference, Joko announced Budi would no longer be a candidate for the role of police chief, citing public discontent over his nomination.
