Former Fiji PMs plan 2010 poll

Sydney Morning Herald - September 4, 2009

Two former Fijian prime ministers have joined forces in a plan to take the troubled Pacific nation to the polls next year.

Former rivals Laisenia Qarase and Mahendra Chaudhry have hatched a plan that would bring elections four years earlier than planned by the military regime.

Self-appointed prime minister Frank Bainimarama overthrew Mr Qarase's government in December 2006 and has put elections back to September 2014.

He argues that five years is needed to reform an unfair race-based voting system.
