Coalition expresses alarm over border violations
West Papua National Coalition for Liberation Press Statement - July 15, 2008
West Papua National Coalition for Liberation expressed alarm over border violation and discretion of border marker in Vanimo, Sandaun Province by the Indonesian Military.
We condemn this blatant violation by the Indonesians the Secretary General of WPNCL Mr. Rex Rumakiek said. He further stated that his Coalition supports the call by Hon. Belden Namah for the border to be closed until the issue is resolved. This is very important for the safety of the people in Sandaun Province.
Mr. Rumakiek stated that this is not the first time the Indonesian Military violates PNG sovereignty and for sure would not the last. There had been numerous violations in the past despite border agreements between the two countries. The Indonesian excuse had always been, "their Military is searching for members of the OPM, the independent movement of West Papua."
We have been calling on successive PNG governments that the best safeguard for PNG security is the permanent solution of the West Papuan issue. PNG is in the best position to assist in finding that solution. Appeasement will only prolong the conflict and suffering. For Indonesia as it seem, appeasement is another way of endorsing what they are doing. Mr. Rumakiek said.
