Thai government survives no-confidence vote
Associated Press - March 21, 2009
Bangkok – The government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has survived a no-confidence vote following two days of opposition attacks in Parliament.
Abhisit and five of his Cabinet ministers, who took office just three months ago, won the vote by comfortable margins Saturday. The prime minister's vote count was 246 to 176.
The parliamentary debate was initiated by the Phuea Thai Party, which supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Thaksin, who remains popular in the countryside, fled into exile last year and has been convicted in absentia of violating a conflict of interest law.
Opposition MPs criticized the government for poor performance in economic and other issues, but failed to deliver any knock-out punches.
