Woman made to bow before Thai king's portrait over alleged royal family criticism

ABC News - October 17, 2016

Liam Cochrane – A woman in Thailand has been forced to publicly bow before a portrait of the country's late king after she allegedly posted comments on social media critical of the royal family.

Video posted online shows a crowd of people outside a police station in Koh Samui — an island popular with Australian tourists. They jeer as a woman is brought out by police and kneels in front of the king's portrait.

It is not clear what she wrote on Facebook, but she has been charged with insulting the royal family, and could be jailed for 15 years.

Thailand is always sensitive about any perceived criticism of the king and that has only increased since his death last week. While full moon beach parties and concerts have been cancelled, most bars, restaurants and tourist attractions remain open.
