Appeal for solidarity from export zone workers in the Philippines

Labor Party-Philippines - June 23, 2009

The workers of Paul-Yu Phils. Corp., a Taiwanese-owned factory in Mactan Export Processing Zone in Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines producing lamp shades for the US, Europe and global market, have been on a week of work stoppage in support of seven suspended leaders of their workers association. In response and as a form of harassment, management suspended for 30 days starting this week more than 300 workers who had participated in the recent protests.

The suspension of the seven leaders was in retaliation for the protest action last May 8 and the filing of a case last May 21 against management's numerous unfair labor practices. These are the three-day workweek implemented since December that lacks proper documentation and due notice with the Labor Department; the reduction of workdays for regular workers even as production is outsourced to contractors; use of an unregistered manpower agency to supply contractual workers; non-regularization of contractual and agency workers; non-payment of holiday pay; non-remittance of social security deductions for agency workers; non-implementation of paternity leave; and non-payment of break time.

The demands of the Paul Yu workers are: the immediate lifting of the suspension on the seven leaders and the more than 300 workers; and for negotiations to begin with the workers for the redress of their grievances regarding reduction of workdays, contractualization of work and implementation of benefits.

The Paul Yu workers association through its president Willy Dondoyano and the Partido ng Manggagawa (Labor Party-Philippines) is appealing for solidarity.
