MTUC picket against labour law amendments

Malaysian Socialist Party (PSM) Press Release - October 3, 2011

PSM today congratulates the MTUC for organising the protest at the Parliment building this morning calling for the repeal of proposed amendments to the Labour Law. PSM Chairperson Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim and members of JERIT joined the 500 strong crowd to voice their discontent on the amendment proposal.

It is learnt that in a last minute attempt, the Human Resources Minister called for a meeting with the unions this morning to convince them to call of the picket. PSM learnt that Khalid Attan the MTUC president attended the meeting with the Minister but refuse to call of the picket and he left the meeting, informing the Minister that the has to join his fellow workers in the picket.

The proposed amendments would erode workers rights, as contractors for labour would be given recognition by the Ministry as parties in charge of workers. Thus, letting off the principal employer of his responsibility to provide for workers welfare.

Even though the Minister might attempt to push through the amendments, PSM calls the MTUC to persist in their protest and not to give in to the governments sweet talk. The MTUC should call for another round of protest if the government refuses to listen to the workers demand.

Long live workers' struggle.
