Cops to quiz organisers of all three planned rallies

The Star - June 26, 2011

Kuala Lumpur – Organisers of all three rallies planned for July 9 have been called in for questioning by the police next week.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar said both Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali had been "invited to the Bukit Aman headquarters".

"I hope they will cooperate with us," he said after opening the Royal Malaysian Police Innovation Day here yesterday.

Khalid said the force would not hesitate to send notices if they failed to show up. The police, he added, were also investigating the case under Section 27 of the Police Act for attempting to hold an illegal gathering.

Ibrahim had announced that Perkasa would hold a demonstration to counter the Bersih 2.0 rally. Khairy had also said that Umno Youth would continue with its planned march.

Khalid also said 1,248 reports had been lodged against the rally. He also clarified that several people were arrested in Shah Alam recently for illegally handing out pamphlets, and not for wearing yellow shirts.

Bersih 2.0 chairman Datuk S. Ambiga said police had asked her and five other committee members to be present for questioning. "I was supposed to report to the Dang Wangi police headquarters today (Saturday) but this has been pushed to 2pm on Monday."

In Kluang, Johor, police arrested seven people, including four women, for distributing flyers urging the public to take part in the rally.

In Kepala Batas, police detained 31 activists, including Sungai Siput MPDr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, in relation to the planned rally. The group, including 14 women, were arrested at the Sungai Dua toll plaza.

Police said the activists from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) were in a bus and were on their way to Penang to promote the rally. They were brought to the Seberang Perai Utara police station where their statements were recorded.
