PSM, DAP to clash?

New Straits Times - August 1, 2012

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is on a collision course with DAP over the Jelapang state constituency.

PSM had made it clear that it would not back down from contesting the constituency against Barisan Nasional in the 13th general election. Its secretary-general, S. Arutchelvan, said the party would be fielding its candidate in Jelapang, irrespective of whether DAP was putting up a fight or not.

The controversial state seat is held by BN-friendly independent assemblyman Datuk Hee Yit Foong. "We are asking DAP to give way to us. We feel our request is not too much. It is only one out of 59 seats in the state,"Arutchelvan said.

He said state DAP leaders had indicated that they would field their candidates in Jelapang. "I have met with Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Ming and he promised to bring up this matter with the DAP central executive committee."

PSM national deputy chairman M. Saraswathy, who contested the Jelapang seat in the last general election, expressed confidence that PSM would fare better there.

She attributed her previous loss to her status as an independent candidate. "I believe there is a good chance of winning under the PSM banner since the people support us."

She received 1,275 votes in a three-cornered fight against BN's Loh Koi Pin (5,512 votes) and Hee, who won by a landslide of 12,219 votes.
