Labour Party Pakistan - April 22, 2009

Farooq Tariq – On 20 April, the management of Hamza Board Gojra, a factory owned by Mian Nawaz Sharif family agreed to accept all the demands of the workers. The wages has been increased from Rupees 4000 to 7300, social security cards will be made of all the workers, 32 terminated union leaders are asked to rejoin the factory on increased wages.

Workers went on strike on 12 April after the administration refused to increase the wages as promised. The factory was closed for three days because of strike. The management was able to bring some new workers and some old workers were promised to raise the wages. They were able to reopen the factory and terminated 32 union activists.

The Labour Qaumi Movement and Labour Party Pakistan organized demonstration in Lahore and Faisalabad. A hunger strike camp was established in front of labour department at Faisalabad.

Letters of protests were written to Mian Nawaz Sharif, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab by various social organizations and trade unions. It paid off yesterday on 20 April 2009.

Tariq Mehmood general secretary LPP Toba Tek Singh, who was one of main organizer of the strike told me on telephone that the wage increase is more than what we were demanding. "it is complete victory and we knew that Mian Nawaz Sharif family will have to accept the demands, the reason was simple, they have been talking of justice at all level, we went to ask justice for workers, we got it" he said.
