Maoists make comeback

Sydney Morning Herald - August 30, 2011

Kathmandu – Nepal's Parliament has elected Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai as the fifth prime minister in 37 months in an effort to end the political deadlock destabilising the nation.

Mr Bhattarai's victory returns his Unified Communist Party (Maoist) to the top office two years after it was forced out during a dispute over dismantling its army from the 1996-2006 civil war.

Mr Bhattarai, left, defeated Ramchandra Paudel, the leader of the Nepali Congress Party, with backing from an alliance of regional groups based in the southern lowlands that have close ties to India.

Nepal's parties failed this month to form a consensus government to end their impasse on how to dismantle the 19,000-strong guerilla army and pass a constitution.
