Nepal PM warns of possible coup, asks people to remain vigilant

New Kerala - December 12, 2008

Kathmandu – Nepal Prime Minister and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal warned that the country was likely to face the situation in which the people might have to retaliate against the attempts to grab the achievement gained through people's sacrifice, local media reports said here today.

"Had there been no people's war and people's movement, the country would not have become federal republic," kantipur quoted PM Dahal as saying.

The paper said CPN-Maoist chairman, who became the Prime Minister through a landmark victory in Constituent Assembly (CA) election after launching a decade-long armed insurgency, stressed on the need for making the people aware about the possible situation.

PM Dahal said the people should be mentally prepared to launch revolt if any attempts are made to take over the government just like in 1961 (by the then king Mahendra) and in 2002 (by his son King Gyandendra).

"The weapons that were in the hands of the [then] king has not come in the hands of people yet. They are still in the middle, if they are taken back by the feudal lords the people should revolt," said Mr Dahal.

The Prime Minister, however, said he was speaking theoretically without an intention to affect the present political situation.

Saying that everyone should be alert for the new constitution-making, PM Dahal warned that the achievement made so far might vanish if we stayed being complacent saying that the peace has prevailed.
