In the hope of defusing growing demands to issue an official apology and provide compensation and rehabilitation to survivors and victim's of families of the 1965 anti-communist purge, in which as many as 1 million communists and left-wing sympathisers were killed and thousands others interned without trial, the government has announced it will hold a national symposium in April to seek recommendations on how to resolve one of the darkest chapters in Indonesia's history.
